Pigmentation can happen due to many factors such as hormonal changes, sun damage after inflammation, or skin injury. All types of pigmentation can be treated with suitable therapies and patience.
Today we’ll introduce you to two very famous hyperpigmentation treatments – Cosmelan and Dermamelan. Patients often ask us what the difference is between the two. This article will explain how they both work, what they have in common, and how they differ.
#1 What do Cosmelan and Dermamelan have in common, and how do they work?
Before we jump into the treatments’ benefits, we’d like to share one critical study published in NCBI. It says that human races which have dark skins produce ten times more melanin than white races:
Results from studies with human melanocyte cultures derived from different racial skin types reveal an excellent correlation between the melanin content of melanocyte cultures and the in situ activity of tyrosinase. Melanocytes derived from black skin have up to 10 times more tyrosinase activity and produce up to 10 times more melanin than melanocytes derived from white skin. However, the higher level of tyrosinase activity in melanocytes derived from black skin is not due to a greater abundance of tyrosinase.
Each of us has an enzyme called tyrosinase which produces melanin and melanocytes. Melanin gives coloration to our skins, hairs, eyes, and more. The more melanin our bodies produce, the darker the skin becomes.
Cosmelan and Dermamelan inhibit the production of melanin by suppressing the function of tyrosinase. Less tyrosine, less melanin. This process helps the body stop accumulating pigmentation and stimulates it to recover the skin. Thus the treatments are considered the best therapies for topical skin lightening and pigmentation removal.
Dermamelan and Cosmelan don’t contain bleaching agents. They have acids and vitamins which help the skin recover from pigmentation.
#2 Are before and after pictures real? How is it possible to achieve such results?
We always provide to our customers only natural and non-photo shopped pictures. Cosmelan and Dermamelan are famous treatments worldwide, and they’ve proved their effects. These results come in a few months, and they last if you continue to take care of your skin.
This means:
- Continue using recommended by your therapist home care creams for melanin suppression;
- Always apply high SPF before exposing your skin to the sun;
- Do regular touch-ups with Cosmelan/Dermamelan Peel treatment;
- Add glutathione therapy to your routine.

#3 How do Cosmelan and Dermamelan differ from each other?
Cosmelan and Dermamelan work similarly. Dermamelan is considered the more robust version of Cosmelan. In Dermamelan, the active ingredients are more concentrated. Thus, it’s suitable for severe dark spots and very heavy pigmentation. Cosmelan, on the other hand, is milder and ideal for mild pigmentation skin conditions.
In general:
- Cosmelan – lighter, milder effect, suitable for soft forms of pigmentation;
- Dermamelan – stronger, ideal for severe pigmentation and aggressive dark spots.
Our therapists will evaluate your skin condition and recommend a better alternative for your case in a free consultation.
#4 What to expect during and after the therapy?
The therapy consists of one session at the clinic and then at home skin aftercare with prescribed products. The price of Cosmelan and Dermamelan includes your homecare kit.
You will come to the clinic so we can apply the mask over your face. It will be on a thick layer that must stay on your face for 6-12 hours. After application, you will receive complete instructions on how to remove it and when.
When you return home, 5-12 hours have passed, and you’ve already taken off the mask, you will start applying the homecare products. You’ll receive complete guidance.
You will start peeling off after the 3rd day of the therapy.
Recovery process:
- During the first week, you’ll see how pigmentation starts fading away;
- After two weeks, you’ll see how your skin will become glowing, vibrant, and visibly more clear;
- Full results you will see after 5-6 weeks.
We always recommend doing Before and After pictures so you can follow your progress.

#5 Your therapy progress and your therapist
Keep in mind that your therapist will be there for you daily. From you, we’ll expect to update us daily for everything – how do you feel, what happens with your skin, if you have something unusual, and if you have any questions or worries.
Your therapist will become your best friend for the following few months. We’ll text and talk until the end of your therapy course. This will help us evaluate your progress and take action in time if your skin is too sensitive.
#6 Do Cosmelan and Dermamelan have side effects?
Side effects of both treatments can happen after any treatment, depending on your skin sensitivity. Usually, the treatment can lead to:
- Redness and discomfort;
- Tightness and itchiness;
- Scarring if you pull the peeled skin.
Cosmelan and Dermamelan can be done any time of the year on any skin type. Please make sure you follow your therapist’s guidelines so you achieve the best results.
#7 Who should not use Cosmelan and Dermamelan?
Both treatments are prohibited for the use of pregnant and breastfeeding women and clients who have rosacea or have been on acne medical treatment in the last six months.
Make sure you share with your doctor everything about your skin condition and your medications intake. This will help them evaluate adequately what is good for you and recommend suitable alternatives.
#8 How long do results last?
Results can last for years if you take proper care and maintain your condition appropriately. We recommend you continue using Cosmelan/Dermamelan home care products since they inhibit melanin production.
It’s vital to protect your skin from the sun and do regular treatment touch-ups. Your doctor will give you recommendations for that matter.
To enhance your results, we also recommend combining Cosmelan/Dermamelan with Glutathione injection therapy. Glutathione suppresses the production of melanin, naturally makes the skin lighter, and detoxes your body. It’s a tremendous accompanying tool for any pigmentation therapy.
#8 How many times a year can you do Cosmelan or Dermamelan?
This depends on your skin condition. If you have deep melasma, you can do Cosmelan/Dermamelan therapy every 2-3 months. There’s no general rule for how many times a year you can do it – this depends on your skin condition, goals, and your therapist’s evaluation.
Please consult with your therapist for the results you are looking to achieve to give you suitable guidance.

#9 Cosmelan and Dermamelan in combination with hormonal imbalance
We recommend that all patients who have pigmentation due to hormonal changes talk to their physician for suitable medical, hormonal treatment. Cosmelan/Dermamelan alone would not be enough.
It’s imperative to do both therapies in parallel so you receive maximum benefits.
#10 Are Cosmelan and Dermamelan suitable for eye area pigmentation or dark circles?
In general, we don’t recommend Cosmelan and Dermamelan for under-eye circles cure nor eye area pigmentation. That is because these feelings are powerful and might awaken unwanted sensitivity – eye redness, discomfort, allergic reaction.
We apply the peelings near the eye area but not over the eye area.
Our recommendation is to consider alternative treatments such as Mesotherapy. Contact us to give you complete information about which treatments would be most suitable for your needs.
#11 Cosmelan/Dermamelan for bodily parts pigmentation reduction
These peels can be applied to any body parts that require pigmentation reduction. They are not reserved only for facial skin. For example, you can use the therapies to remove pigmentation from the underarms, elbows, knees, arms, and fingers.
