What is a double chin, and what causes it?
Several things sit behind it, usually in combination:
| Cause | How it creates a double chin | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Fat under the chin | A layer of fat sits under the jaw and above the neck. It can happen at a normal body weight, because genetics decide where you store fat. | Weight loss if you carry extra fat overall. Fat-reducing treatments or liposuction for a stubborn pocket. |
| Chin and jaw shape | A small or receding chin, or a soft jawline, makes the area under it look fuller even in lean people. | Chin filler, a chin implant or jaw surgery, because the cause is structure, not fat. |
| Ageing and loose skin | Collagen and elastin decline over time, so skin no longer grips the tissue below and starts to sag under the jaw. | Skin-tightening treatments such as HIFU or Morpheus8. A neck lift for significant laxity. |
| Weight gain or big weight swings | Gaining weight enlarges the fat pad. Losing a lot of weight can leave loose skin behind. | Gradual, sustainable weight management. Skin tightening or surgery for leftover skin. |
| Forward head posture | Holding your head forward, for example over a phone, changes how the neck looks and makes the fullness more visible. | Better ergonomics and posture. It improves the look but does not remove fat. |
| Neck muscle bands | Prominent platysma muscle cords create vertical bands and blur the jawline. | Botulinum toxin for mild bands. Surgery on the neck muscle for prominent ones. |
One important point: a double chin that appears suddenly, or comes with a lump, pain or trouble swallowing, is not a cosmetic issue. Thyroid problems can also contribute in some people, therefore please see a doctor first.
Why does the cause of your double chin matter?
The cause is important because each cause needs a different fix. Tightening a fat pocket will disappoint you. Removing fat from loose skin can make the sagging more obvious. And no amount of either will bring a recessed chin forward.
“Before I choose a device, I ask one question: what is actually creating the fullness? If it is fat, tightening alone will disappoint you. If it is loose skin, removing fat can make it look worse. Getting that diagnosis right matters more than which machine we use.” Dr. Ludmila Yaghorova, Medical Director, 7 Derma Center
How can you tell which type you have?
A few checks at home give a rough idea:
The pinch test. Gently pinch the area under your chin. A thick, soft fold suggests fat. A thin, loose layer of skin suggests laxity.
The profile check. Stand sideways to a mirror with your head level. If your chin sits well behind a vertical line dropped from your lower lip, chin projection may matter more than fat.
The neck-band check. Tighten your neck by grimacing or looking up. Visible vertical cords point to the neck muscle (platysma), which fat or skin treatments will not fix.
The weight check. If your weight is still changing, wait until it is stable before judging any result.
| If this is you | Usually start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A soft, pinchable fat pad and firm skin | SculpSure or fat-loss mesotherapy | They act directly on fat and do not rely on skin tightening. |
| Mostly loose or crepey skin, little fat | HIFU or Morpheus8 | Their main benefit is collagen contraction and remodelling. |
| Both fat and loose skin | A combination: fat first, then tightening | Reducing fat can reveal laxity, so we tighten afterwards. The order and settings are planned. |
| A recessed or small chin | Chin filler or an implant, with or without a fat or skin treatment | None of the four treatments reliably adds projection. |
| Visible vertical neck bands | Botulinum toxin for mild bands, surgery for prominent ones | The cause is the neck muscle, not fat or skin. |
| Heavy skin laxity or a large fat deposit | A surgical assessment | Liposuction or a neck lift is more reliable when the problem is large. |
| Weight still changing | Wait until it is stable | Weight changes alter the area and can distort how you judge a result. |
How do HIFU, Morpheus8, SculpSure and mesotherapy work?
At 7 Derma Center we use four non-surgical options for the chin and jawline. Two of them mainly tighten skin, and two of them reduce fat.
| Treatment | Mainly targets | How it works | Typical course | Downtime | Honest limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HIFU (Ultraformer 3) | Loose skin and early sagging. Some effect on a small amount of fat at deeper settings | Focused ultrasound heats deep layers, contracts collagen and stimulates new collagen | Often one session, repeated if needed | Mild redness or tenderness | Will not fix a weak chin or a large fat pad. Much of the published data is on other HIFU devices |
| Morpheus8 | Mild to moderate laxity plus skin texture. Some effect on fat at depth | Microneedles deliver radiofrequency heat that remodels tissue and builds collagen and elastin | Several sessions, weeks apart | Redness, pinpoint marks and swelling for a few days | Less powerful for a large fat pad. Chin-specific studies are small |
| SculpSure | A defined, pinchable pocket of fat with firm skin | Laser heat damages fat cells, the body then clears them | Usually one to two sessions, about six weeks apart | Minimal, possible tenderness | Does not tighten skin. Main trial was manufacturer-sponsored |
| Fat-loss mesotherapy | Small to moderate fat deposits with good skin tone | Tiny injections of a lipolytic solution damage fat cells, immune cells clear the debris | A short course of sessions | Swelling, bruising, sometimes numbness, for a few days | Evidence depends on the ingredients. Unapproved mixtures carry documented risks |
HIFU (Ultraformer 3): focused ultrasound for loose skin and early sagging
HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. It sends focused ultrasound energy to precise depths beneath the skin without breaking the surface. The tiny points of heat contract existing collagen, then trigger your body to build new collagen over the next weeks. The result is firmer skin and a sharper jawline, building gradually over about two to three months.
At deeper settings, HIFU can also damage a modest amount of fat. Published reports suggest that most of the treated fat cells are cleared within about 12 weeks. It suits mild to moderate sagging, with or without a small amount of fat. Expect mild redness or tenderness afterwards, and little to no downtime. The practitioner should map your jawline and plan around the nerve that runs along it.
The honest limit: it will not correct a recessed chin, and it is not a replacement for fat removal when the fat pocket is large.

Morpheus8: microneedling with radiofrequency for tightening and texture
Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency heat. Fine needles go beneath the skin and release radiofrequency energy at a chosen depth, creating controlled micro-injuries. The heat contracts existing collagen for some early tightening, and the healing response then builds new collagen and elastin. When set deeper, it can also affect the fat layer.
It suits someone whose double chin combines mild fullness with skin laxity, especially when fine lines or crepey texture are part of the concern. It is usually done as a short course of sessions spaced weeks apart. Redness, pinpoint marks and some swelling are common for a few days.
The honest limit: it is less powerful for a large fat pad, and results depend heavily on depth, energy and operator technique. Studies on the area under the chin specifically are small, so we use it mainly as a tightening and refining treatment.

SculpSure: a laser for a defined pocket of fat
SculpSure is a non-invasive laser. A small applicator rests under the chin and heats the fat layer while the skin surface stays protected. The heat damages the fat cells, which triggers inflammation, and your body clears the damaged cells over the following weeks. A session takes about 25 minutes, and most people feel warmth rather than pain.
It suits a pinchable pocket of fat with reasonably firm skin. In the manufacturer’s clearance study of 57 people, fat thickness under the chin fell by about 15 percent on ultrasound measurement 12 weeks after the last session, with most people receiving two treatments six weeks apart.
The honest limit: SculpSure does not tighten skin in a meaningful way, so if the skin is already loose, it can look more noticeable once the fat reduces.

Fat-loss mesotherapy: injections for small to moderate fat deposits
“Mesotherapy” is a broad word. For a double chin, it means tiny injections of a fat-dissolving (lipolytic) solution placed directly into the fat under the chin. The solution damages the walls of the fat cells, and the body’s immune cells then clear the debris over the following weeks. Some scarring-type tissue change may also add a little tightening. It is normally done as a short course.
It suits a small to moderate, localized fat pocket with good skin elasticity. Swelling, tenderness and bruising for a few days are common, and numbness can happen too.
The honest limit, and the one we want you to understand: what is in the syringe matters enormously. Injections near the jaw should only be done by a doctor who knows the anatomy, using a product they can name.
What does the treatment journey look like?
- Examination and diagnosis. The doctor checks the fat pad, skin quality, neck bands and chin projection, and asks about your weight history and medical background. This step decides the plan.
- A clear plan. You hear which treatment or combination fits, how many sessions to expect, and what the result can and cannot do. If another route suits you better, we say so.
- The session. Most sessions take 15 to 45 minutes. We name the device or product used, and the setting is matched to the area.
- Healing and clearing. Mild redness or swelling settles in days. Over weeks, the body clears treated fat and builds collagen. A second session is often planned around week six.
- Review. Most of the visible change appears at around three months. We then decide together if a top-up helps.
In Dubai’s climate, protect the treated area with sunscreen daily while it heals, and ask how long to avoid saunas, steam rooms and intense workouts after your specific treatment.
When do you need more than these four treatments?
Non-surgical treatments work best for mild to moderate cases. Some situations call for something else, or something added:
- A recessed or small chin. Fat and skin treatments cannot add projection. Hyaluronic acid filler or a chin implant addresses the real cause, and filler can be combined with fat or skin treatment.
- Visible neck bands. Botulinum toxin can soften mild bands for some people. Prominent bands may need surgery on the neck muscle (platysmaplasty).
- A large fat deposit with good skin. Submental liposuction removes more fat in one go than any non-invasive option.
- Significant loose skin. A neck lift, or a facelift with neck contouring, tightens skin and muscle more reliably than energy devices.
Surgery is not automatically the better answer. It becomes the more reliable one when the anatomy needs direct removal or tightening of fat, skin or muscle. Expect about one to two weeks of bruising and swelling after many of these procedures, and discuss anaesthesia, smoking and blood-thinning medicines with the surgeon beforehand.
What can you do at home, and what does not work?
Home habits support your result, but they cannot selectively burn fat under the chin, remove loose skin or change chin bone.
- Keep a stable, healthy weight. If extra body fat contributes, gradual weight loss can reduce the fat under the chin. Big swings in weight can leave loose skin behind.
- Stay active. Regular cardio and strength training help body composition and help prevent weight regain after treatment.
- Fix your head position. Raise screens to eye level and avoid long periods looking down at your phone. It will not remove fat, but it stops the area looking worse.
- Look after your skin. Daily sunscreen protects collagen. A retinoid or vitamin C product may help skin quality over time if your skin tolerates it. They will not shrink a fat pad.
Chin exercises, facial massage, slimming creams and chewing gum do not have good evidence for removing a double chin. They are harmless, but they are not a treatment.
How do you keep the result?
Fat cells destroyed by SculpSure or mesotherapy do not come back in the treated area, but the remaining fat cells can grow if you gain weight. A stable weight is the single best way to protect your result.
Skin tightening from HIFU and Morpheus8 is not permanent, because your skin keeps ageing. Many patients plan a maintenance session about once a year, depending on their skin and how it responds. Strength training, daily sunscreen and avoiding yo-yo dieting all help.
How much does double chin treatment cost in Dubai?
The price depends on the treatment, the number of sessions and the size of the area.
Be careful with very low prices. For injections near the jaw, or for a laser or ultrasound session, ask who performs it, which device or product is used, and whether a doctor examines you first.
FAQs
Can a double chin go away without treatment?
Sometimes. If weight gain is the main cause, losing weight can reduce it. Genetic fat pockets, loose skin and jaw structure do not respond to diet or exercise, so many people need treatment to see a real change.
Do chin exercises or chewing gum get rid of a double chin?
There is no good scientific evidence that they do. They do not remove fat or tighten skin in a measurable way. If you enjoy them, they are harmless, but they are not a substitute for treatment.
What is the best treatment for a double chin?
There is no single best one, because it depends on the cause. Fat responds to SculpSure or fat-loss mesotherapy, loose skin responds to HIFU or Morpheus8, and a weak chin needs filler or an implant. The best result usually comes from matching treatment to cause.
Can HIFU remove a double chin?
HIFU works best when loose skin is the main problem, because it tightens the area and sharpens the jawline. At deeper settings it can also reduce a modest amount of fat. It will not fix a large fat pocket or a recessed chin, so we examine you first.
Does SculpSure work on a double chin?
Yes, when the double chin is a defined pocket of fat and the skin is reasonably firm. In the manufacturer’s clearance study, fat thickness fell by about 15 percent at 12 weeks. SculpSure does not tighten skin, so we check skin quality first.
What is the difference between Morpheus8 and HIFU for the chin?
Both tighten skin. HIFU uses focused ultrasound to work on deeper layers. Morpheus8 combines microneedling with radiofrequency and also improves skin texture. Which one suits you depends on how much sagging you have and what else you want to treat.
Is double chin treatment permanent?
Fat cells destroyed by SculpSure or mesotherapy do not come back, but remaining cells can grow if you gain weight. Skin tightening is not permanent because skin keeps ageing, so many people schedule a maintenance session.
When will I see results?
Fat reduction and collagen tightening both build gradually. Most patients see the full result after about two to three months. Swelling can hide the early change, so judge the result once it has settled.
Can I combine treatments for a double chin?
Yes, and it is often the best plan when fat and loose skin are both present. A common approach is to reduce the fat first, then tighten the skin so it settles smoothly over the new contour.
Do non-surgical treatments help a weak chin?
No. HIFU, Morpheus8, SculpSure and fat-loss mesotherapy cannot add chin projection. A recessed chin needs filler, an implant or jaw surgery, sometimes combined with fat or skin treatment.
When is surgery a better choice?
Surgery is more reliable for a large fat deposit, significant loose skin, prominent neck bands or a clear structural problem. Liposuction and neck lift options exist for these cases. We tell you honestly if non-surgical treatment will not be enough.
Do men get a double chin too, and can they be treated?
Yes. Men develop fat under the chin and skin laxity just as women do, and the same treatments apply. The plan is adjusted to the thicker skin and different jawline shape.
